Rechercher l'information, la trier, l'évaluer puis la traduire en termes utiles pour l'entreprise, telle est la mission de l'économiste.

Chercheur, interprète, conseiller
L'économiste a trois rôles principaux :
- Chercheur : il doit avoir une démarche de recherche fondamentale, c'est-à-dire être
capable de chercher sans savoir à priori ce qu'il va trouver. Ses sources d'information :
les journaux, les publications professionnelles, les revues de divers organismes de
recherche et de conjoncture. Cela nécessite un esprit curieux mais aussi intuitif, afin
de pouvoir sélectionner la ou les informations intéressantes et de rapprocher des faits
apparemment insignifiants.
- Interprète : il lui faut interpréter les faits économiques et les traduire en
données directement opérationnelles. Il doit savoir communiquer les résultats de ses
analyses. Ses interlocuteurs ne sont pas forcément préparés au maniement du
raisonnement économique. Il lui faut faire passer son message, sans simplifier à
outrance et sans donner aux analyses prévisionnelles l'apparence d'une science exacte.
Talent de rédacteur et force de persuasion lui sont nécessaires pour faire parler les
chiffres, pour persuader les responsables opérationnels.
- Conseiller : Sa rentabilité se mesure à l'aune de la persuasion. Toutefois, il doit
fondamentalement rester pragmatique et concret : c'est l'activité immédiate ou à court
terme d'une entreprise qui est en jeu à travers ses prévisions.

Les différents types de postes
L'analyse des offres d'emploi dégage 4 grandes catégories de postes d'économiste
avec des fonctions légèrement différentes :
- Analyse et prévision économiques en entreprise, il a pour mission de concevoir et
mettre en oeuvre des outils d'aide à la décision en vue de l'élaboration de la
stratégie de développement de l'entreprise. Ce travail concerne, selon les cas, soit
l'environnement économique de l'entreprise dans son ensemble, soit son secteur
d'activité.
- Analyse et information économiques en organisme professionnel : l'économiste peut
être aussi appelé chargé d'études économiques, statisticien. Il travaille pour le
compte d'un syndicat ou d'une association professionnelle et y joue un rôle d'expert
économique. Informer, assister et conseiller les entreprises adhérentes, diffuser les
informations concernant la profession auprès des administrations intéressées, des
médias... sont ses activités essentielles.
- Etudes économiques dans un organisme d'études privé : le chargé d'études (ou
responsable d'études ou ingénieur économiste) réalise des études quantitatives ou/et
qualitatives pour le compte d'une société. La fonction comporte un double aspect :
production de l'étude (conception d'un projet - recueil de données sur le terrain -
exploitation des résultats - modélisation) mais aussi commercialisation de l'étude
(négociation du projet et de son devis avec le client, présentation des résultats).
- Etudes macro et micro-économiques dans un organisme public : Par exemple : études de
diagnostic économique, préalable à une intervention publique pour le compte d'une
administration, études particulières pour une collectivité locale avant une opération
d'urbanisme.
Les fonctions de l'économiste peuvent être plus spécifiquement tournées vers la
statistique. Il est alors plus fréquemment appelé chargé d'études statistiques ou
statisticien.

Solide formation économique, esprit curieux, talents de persuasion
Les tâches de recherche et de sélection de l'information nécessitent un esprit
curieux et intuitif afin de pouvoir sélectionner les informations intéressantes et
rapprocher des faits apparemment insignifiants. Il faut être capable de travailler à la
fois seul et en réseaux. Faire passer le message auprès des responsables opérationnels
suppose des qualités de communicateur. Des compétences rédactionnelles sont donc
indispensables, elles s'appuient sur la maîtrise de la micro-informatique : traitement de
textes et tableurs.
Que l'on soit économiste, commercial, gestionnaire ou ingénieur il est nécessaire
d'avoir acquis la connaissance de l'entreprise, sa culture, ses domaines d'intervention.
Par exemple, l'aménagement du territoire en ce qui concerne les transports demande une
très bonne connaissance de tous les partenaires, privés et publics et de leur mode
d'intervention. Il est nécessaire d'être sensibilisé aux approches intermodales et
transversales des problèmes. Conseiller un chef d'entreprise ou un responsable marketing
c'est provoquer des choix, infléchir une orientation : l'économiste doit rester
pragmatique et concret.
